I am a shameless fan of Chan Wook-park’s 2003 cult classic Oldboy. This is not just one of the best Korean films in recent years, but one of the best revenge sagas ever made. And, now, I have even more reason than usual to push you to rent the original film. Because, it looks like an American remake is in the works, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Will Smith. I’m a fan of both Hollywood heavyweights, but Oldboy? Oldboy? Why mess with such a recent classic? And, will it be as brutal and bloody and dark as Chan Wook-park’s original? I doubt it, but I’d love to be surprised. For starters, are they really going to stay true to the original film’s twist? I know that the original wasn’t exactly a mainstream hit in America, but this news has my arms crossed for now.
