Halloween had an encore late Sunday evening as Enzian hosted the Orlando premiere of REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA with director Darren Lynn Bousman and producer/actor Terrance Zdunich in attendance. Bousman, a local product who graduated from Full Sail University in Winter Park and went on to direct the first three SAW sequels, has apparently struck a nerve with a cult audience that knows what it wants and by all accounts, REPO! delivers in spades. The 10 PM screening sold out a couple of weeks in advance, and people were actually scalping tickets as dozens of fans got turned away. Moviegoers came from all over the state (many in costume), and one guy even flew in from Puerto Rico (we got him a seat). Another man lobbied for a ticket so that he could get it signed by Ogre, the ex-Ministry musician who acts in the film that he was planning on seeing soon.
A sci-fi/horror rock opera gore extravaganza (!) set in a post-apocalyptic world in which a biotech corporation sells body organs and then reclaims them by force from customers delinquent in their payments, REPO! boasts an eclectic cast that seem more than game: SPY KIDS’ Alexa Vega, BUFFY’s Anthony Stewart Head, Paul Sorvino, Paris Hilton, and pop diva Sarah Brightman. Whether or not it finds a place in the pantheon of midnight movies and cult classics remains to be seen–for now it was just nice to have Darren and Terrance in town for one crazed screening and maybe just maybe, Enzian can get it back for a week or a weekend of late shows. I kind of doubt Lionsgate will be opening this one for a regular run down at the mall.
