“Silent Light,” Carlos Reygadas’ luminous, mystifying and now somewhat legendary unreleased Mennonite Mexican drama, is finally coming to theaters. After first reporting in July that the film would get released by Palisades Pictures this winter and then receiving info from the film’s foreign sales company that contradicted my earlier report, it turns out I may have been right in the first place.
Palisades, an entertainment company that bought the rights to Tartan’s library after the company went under, has booked “Silent Light” at the Film Forum for a January 7 opening. Currently, there are no other venues set, so this could be your last chance to see the movie that Martin Scorsese, no less, recently described as a transcendant experience.
After the film received a 6-day run at the Museum of Modern Art in September (the last time it was the last time to catch the movie), I was told by a MoMA programmer that getting the film was a “cliffhanger” and “a complex story.” I hope to get down to the bottom of that story in a forthcoming article.
