Gus Van Sant’s Milk is one of the best films I’ve seen all year. Sean Penn, James Franco, Emile Hirsch, and Josh Brolin turn in terrific performances. Van Sant allows the biopic narrative to unfold in a conventional manner, yet adds a flourish here and there, to lend his trademark experimentalism. I’m not sure what else to say about this movie, other than that I found it moving, timely, funny, and powerful. What a story. What a man. What a second chance to make a first impression.
