This is my last chance not to embarrass myself. The last two days has seen a sad 5/12 predictions right for the NYFCC, 2/7 for the LAFCA (though I had Wall-E down until the very last minute, me swears), and a better but not optimal 7/10 for the BFCA’s top ten (does it count that I said “my temptation is to leave of Revolutionary Road,” even though I didn’t?).
So now comes the main event of the week, the good ol’ Golden Globes, and my last opportunity to reign geek supreme before throwing it and turning my bets to professional sports in shame.
My predictions, after the jump.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Possible: The Wrestler, Doubt, Revolutionary Road, The Reader, Gran Torino, Rachel Getting Married, Eleven nominees.
Winner?: Slumdog Millionaire.
BEST COMEDY or MUSICAL
Burn After Reading
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Possible: Last Chance Harvey, Sex and the City, The Brothers Bloom, Tropic Thunder, In Bruges, High School Musical 3
Winner?: What a horribly empty category. Probably Mamma Mia, though Happy-Go-Lucky would be the classy option.
BEST DRAMA ACTOR
Leonardo diCaprio, Revolutionary Road
Clint Eastwood, Gran Torino
Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn, Milk
Brad Pitt, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
Possible: Richard Jenkins
Winner?: An intense race. I really could see any of them winning. Im going to say Rourke narrowly over Penn or Eastwood, even though he won’t win SAG or Oscar.
BEST COMEDY or MUSICAL ACTOR
Javier Bardem, Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Adrien Brody, Cadillac Records
George Clooney, Burn After Reading
Ricky Gervais, Ghost Town
Dustin Hoffman, Last Chance Harvey
Possible: Ben Stiller, Jim Carrey, Colin Farrell, George Clooney, Steve Coogan
Winner?: This is the weakest category in recent memory. Dustin Hoffman is all but assured here.
BEST DRAMA ACTRESS
Cate Blanchett, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie, Changeling
Meryl Streep, Doubt
Kristin Scott Thomas, I’ve Loved You So Long

Winner? i wish I could confidently say Winslet but I can’t. Anybody could win, really.

Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky
Sarah Jessica Parker, Sex and the City
Meryl Streep, Mamma Mia!
Emma Thompson, Last Chance Harvey
Possible: Frances McDormand, maybe even Jennifer Aniston for that dog movie just so everyone’s in the room.
Winner? It better be Hawkins. This category was made to honor performances like hers. If Parker wins over Hawkins….
