Film Critic Endangered Species List Adds Another: Melissa Anderson

UPDATED (9/15): Another film writing jobwriter bites the dust. Just a week after Village Voice Media axed longtime critic Ella Taylor from the L.A. Weekly, Time Out New York film editor Melissa Anderson has been fired from her position, possibly the latest casualty of old-media’s collapse. I doubt that she will be replaced. It has newly come to my attention that Time Out New York film critic David Fear has been promoted to film editor. A third position — with an embarrassingly low salary — will be filled, so the job isn’t exactly gone, but it sounds like it’ll be going to a neophyte with a knack for listings rather than an established critic.

Anderson, who started fulltime at TONY in 2005, recently joined the New York Film Critics Circle and is perhaps the world’s foremost scholar on actress Francoise Dorleac, the elder, ill-fated sister of Catherine Deneuve. She’s a damn fine nice lady, too, and I’m sad to see her join the massive ranks of the unemployed (welcome to the club). One wonders whether Time Out itself will survive in its current form. With the legendary Voice — newly sans Nat Hentoff — downsized to a mere pamphlet, there’s really few examples of solid waiting-room reading these days. Will Time Out follow suit?
