He Vuelto

He Vuelto

After eight glorious days of living an internet free existence complete with palm trees and endless communist propaganda, I have returned from Cuba. In a new year, with a new age, and with a wide array of anxiety inducing bug bites.

I truly believe that anyone that works in an internet-related field or even spends more than 3 hours a day on the internet, should spend one week of the year completely devoid of it. And to do so in Cuba, where you also get to essentially take a time machine to some bizarre hybrid of worlds (1950s America, 1970s Russia, and something entirely unique in its crumbling beauty) that also has very little materialism or US pop cultural influence is some pretty remarkable icing on the cake.

One downside is the overwhelming intensity of returning to reality. Stacked inboxes, increased pressures from various fronts, odd but proud feelings of detachment from celebrity gossip (John Travolta’s son died?) and then an intense need to feel caught up…

So I’m going to slowly but surely going to return to my blogging pace. First things first, a recap of the past week, which included witnessing the 50th anniversary of the Cuban revolution and infiltrating Havana’s fascinating underground gay scene. And then of course some serious awards season catch up (its amazing how 29/83 degree weather in January can make you completely forget there is a National Society of Film Critics), and in just seven too-short days, the beginning of my second Sundance adventure. But not at least for a few days.

indieWIRE, come Monday, will look entirely different in the best way possible, as will this wee blog. As much as I kind of fear the change in aesthetics due to my inner-old lady, I am certain its for the best and am excited for everyone to get a chance to explore it. In the meantime, though, there’s an intense amount of work to be done on the main site. And I’m also in the midst of a post-vacation, pre-Sundance to-do list from hell. Even if I find some spare moments to give this blog some love, I’m going to have to republish anything I write from this point on the new publishing system.

So I’m going to wait and give this blog a total rest and relaunch with it’s Daddy on Monday. So please come back. And until then, here, here and here are some links to some photos from Cuba.

And, six days late and for what it’s worth, Happy New Year from the lost boy (who is fearing the relevance of his blog name as the his age continues to gain numbers).
