"Dean" and "Cherry" Take Portland Fest Prizes

Audience nods went out capping the 32nd Portland International Film Festival with Tao Frazer’s “Dean Spanley” (New Zealand) and Dorie Dorrie’s “Cherry Blossoms” (Germany) tying for first place in the best feature category. Jennifer Grausman’s “Pressure Cooker,” co-directed with Mark Becker (U.S.) and Agnes Varda’s “The Beaches of Agnes” (France) also tied in the doc category. Best new director, meanwhile, went to Amin Matalga’s “Captain Abu Raed” (Jordan). This year’s Short Film Award goes to Portland filmmaker Heather Harlow for “Nous Deux Encore.”

PIFF reported 31,000 people attended screenings at this year’s fest, which took place February 6 – 22, with 78 features and 36 shorts screening in the line up. The Portland International Film Festival is produced by the Northwest Film Center.
