Hot Docs To Honor Nevins

Hot Docs has announced that Sheila Nevins, president of HBO Documentary Films, will recieve the third annual Doc Mogul Award at this year’s Festival, which runs April 30-May 10. 2009. The award recognizes “an individual who, over the course of his or her career, has made an essential contribution to the creative vitality of the documentary industry, both at home and abroad.” Nevins is the first woman to receive the award. A luncheon presenting the Award will be held Tuesday, May 5, from 12:15-2:30 p.m. at The Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto.

“Our Board of Directors took all of about two seconds to unanimously designate Sheila Nevins for this prestigious honour,” said Chris McDonald, Executive Director, Hot Docs, in a statement. “Her reputation as unflinching creative producer with uncommonly sharp instincts and great taste is international. We are delighted to recognize her work, and welcome her back to Hot Docs.”

Nevins first began with HBO in 1979 and worked for four years as HBO’s director of Documentary Programming. She has won dozens of awards, including Primetime Emmys, News and Documentary Emmys, George Foster Peabody Awards, a Personal Peabody Award in recognition of her ongoing commitment to excellence and an Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to the art of the documentary.

Past winners of the Doc Mogul Award include the BBC’s Nick Fraser (2008) and Rudy Buttignol (2007).
