Magnolia Takes “Faber”

Magnolia Takes "Faber"

John Hindman’s “Arlen Faber,” which premiered in U.S. Dramatic Competition at Sundance this year, has been acquired for U.S. release by Magnolia Pictures. The film was financed by iDeal Partners Film Fund, and produced by Kevin Messick and iDeal’s Jana Edelbaum. Magnolia plans to release the film theatrically this summer.

“‘Arlen Faber’ is a wonderfully acted and funny film,” said Magnolia Pictures President Eamonn Bowles in a statement. “We think that audiences are going to connect strongly with this moving story.”

Starring Jeff Daniels as the title character, “Faber” tells the story of the reclusive author of “Me and God,” a massively popular book that essentially redefined spirituality. His life becomes entangled with a chiropractor (Lauren Graham) and a recovering alcoholic (Lou Taylor Pucci), leading to a series of events that redefines each of their own lives.

“I hear people talk off all the time, and certainly it would be a complaint I would share… not enough time, not enough money,” Hindman said at a screening of the film at Sundance. “But they are all such high quality problems. They are problems I’ve been dreaming about, honest to god, since I was ten years old and walked out of ‘Rocky.’ I knew what I wanted to do with my life. And it’s taken decades to get there. So as frustrating as some of it could be, I don’t have any bad stories… The hardest thing was getting people to let me direct it. You know, I’m like to Kevin [Messick, the film’s producer], if you could just get me in a room with them. They just want to know I’m not stupid or crazy. There’s a lot of people out there that are really talented and haven’t gotten the opportunity I have to be here.”

The deal was negotiated by Magnolia Senior Vice President Tom Quinn and Head of Business Affairs Jason Janego, with ICM, CAA, and Jana Edelbaum from iDeal Partners. Lauren Graham and Jeff Daniels are both repped by ICM.
