If you could wish for one thing to happen the night of the Spirits, what would it be?
A five-way tie for lead actress, maybe?

Hate to beat a dead horse, but these nominees continue to strike me as nonsensically all over the map. And you would have thought that at least the Independent Spirit Awards would nominate Samantha Morton, but alas — it wasn’t meant to be. Fortunately, they should still manage to assemble a respectable list of winners from this bunch.

If you could wish for one thing to happen the night of the Oscars, what would it be?
Aim low: “House of Little Cubes” wins animated short. Aim high: “Milk” beats “Slumdog” (yeah, I was also hoping “L.A. Confidential” would squeak past “Titanic” up until the moment Sean Connery made that announcement; I’m an eternal optimist).

Alright, these nominees are truly boring, but a few things strike me:
1) The acting races are tight (except Supporting Actor), and almost any way they go, it’ll be nice.
2) “The Reader” is not really as bad as people are making it out to be. I’m convinced that people are umm…er…mis-reading it. But that’s a story for another day. (Also, while it isn’t that bad, it is certainly not good).
3) Adapted Screenplay sure is one lousy category.
