The Five Winners Presenting Thing

The Five Winners Presenting Thing

I’ve read around that the industry is still raving about Oscar’s greatest makeover tool: Getting five previous winners to give it to the next one. Allegedly, its got a good chance of sticking around. And I’m all for that. But I wonder about best supporting actor. Notably the weakest quintet in terms of star power, best supporting actor is a problem because its traditionally an “old man category.” And a lot of them are dead (not to mention, with all due respect, this year was a posthumous winner).

Only 3 winners – Joel Grey, Christopher Walken and Robert deNiro – are alive from the seventies (all of which presented, though deNiro in lead, Sunday night). The 80s has six, and the 90s seven. Add that to another 7 from the ’00s, and include the fact that Michael Caine is a repeat, that’s only 25 possibilities, many of them in their 70s and 80s. And five of them have also won in lead, which makes me wonder if they’d grace the “lesser” stage. And five of them have already presented this year. And some of them might want not to do it.

Supporting actress, on the other hand, has options going way back to the 1950s (Dorothy Malone, Eva Marie Saint).

Either way, the point of this entry was more to make suggestions for next year than suggest that this format may have a 3 year expiry for supporting actor.
