Early Friday, a group of us ventured up the Westside Highway to the Jacob Javits Center for New York Comic Con. Cinetic had a little bit of business to get done, but it was also an eye-opening and amusing experience to embrace the inner-geek at such an event. The usual suspects were there: fanboys in costumes, fanboys not in costumes, comic book companies, video game companies, and film distribution companies. Our pals at Magnolia/Magnet, Anchor Bay, After Dark Films, and Media Blasters held court to promote current and upcoming DVD releases. You could line up to have yourself sketched by a famous comic book artist, or line up to get an autograph from the likes of Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and Lou Ferrigno (The Hulk). I was kinda impressed these guys were onhand, and less impressed by their fellow autographer: the guy who played the stormtrooper in the first Star Wars movie who said the line “These are not the droids we’re looking for.”
If you wanted to get a sneak peek at footage from upcoming Hollywood films like Up or Knowing, that was also on the schedule. Or, you could test drive the Wolverine video game inspired by the upcoming film spin-off. And, of course, everywhere you went it was Watchmen, Watchmen, Watchmen. The two properties (Watchmen and X-Men) face-off for your box office dollar this Spring, in a showdown of comic book popularity. Spending a couple of hours on the New York Comic Con floor in 2009, I feel like it’s tough to be Wolverine in a Watchmen world.
