I was watching the sky all morning and, even though we desperately need the rain here in Central Florida, was hoping that at least the lightning would hold off for a few hours in the afternoon. Much to my surprise, the morning thunderstorms subsided and miraculously the sun shone down on the lush Enzian Theater grounds. Why, you might wonder, when a film festival is usually about watching movies indoors (the perfect rainy day pastime I might add) would I be so uptight about a little thunderstorm? The ROCK-AFIRE EXPLOSION, of course! Somehow these things just work out. Not only was the sold-out crowd treated to one of my favorite docs of the festival with the filmmaker, Brett Whitcomb and the writer, Brad Thomason, present — but the subjects, Aaron Fechter and his animatronic creations were in attendance as well! Can you beat that?
The only way I can describe this film is “eerily fascinating”. Yesterday was my 3rd time seeing ROCK-AFIRE and I laughed, became teary-eyed and was struck silent each and every time I’ve seen this wonderful documentary.
Yesterday’s most memorable quote… Docs Selection Committee member, Chris Ramsey, chatting with Aaron Fechter after the doc… “You are our generation’s Walt Disney!”. Enough said.
ps-Stay tuned for video & photos later today.
