Magnet To “Let The Right” Subtitles In

Magnet To "Let The Right" Subtitles In

After an internet uproar yesterday over the changed subtitles on the DVD release of Magnet Releasing’s “Let The Right One In,” the distributor has released a statement via Digital Bits that announced their plans to restore the original subitles:

“We’ve been made aware that there are several fans that don’t like the version of the subtitles on the DVD/BR. We had an alternate translation that we went with. Obviously a lot of fans thought we should have stuck with the original theatrical version. We are listening to the fans feedback, and going forward we will be manufacturing the discs with the subtitles from the theatrical version.”

People interested in buying the new (old) version can look in the technical specs on the back of the DVD package for “Subtitles: English (Theatrical), Spanish.” However, Magnet is refusing to offer exchanges to anyone who has already bought the the DVD, which has upset a bevy of bloggers, including Peter Sciretta at /film:

“If you ask me, the distributor should make every effort to take care of all the upset customers who purchased the dvd under the assumption that it would feature the same subtitles that were released in theaters,” Sciretta writes. “And from the sound of it, I doubt Magnet plans to recall/replace the previously pressed discs which are currently in stores which makes it almost impossible to purchase the movie through an online website like Amazon, because you don’t know what you’re going to get.”

A blogger named RobG, at horror website Icons of Fright, discovered the contrast between the theatrical print of Tomas Alfredson’s Swedish vampire flick and its recent manifestation on DVD and Blu Ray. The film’s subtitles drastically changed en route to DVD, and in the blogger’s words “[had] been completely dumbed down.”
