Say what you will about the record-breaking opening weekend numbers for Fast And Furious ($72.5 million is amazing for an April), but I think it’s pretty cool. One footnote in the massive opening that seems to slip through the cracks, is that it’s also probably the highest opening weekend ever for an Asian-American director in the U.S. Director Justin Lin’s closest competition would be Ang Lee’s 2003 adaptation of Hulk, which launched out of the gate with a little over $60 million. Sure, these numbers would be even more heartening if Fast And Furious was also a study of Asian culture (Lin’s previous Furious film was set in Tokyo, and was also the lowest-grossing of the franchise) but at least it features a multicultural cast.
