Project X Signs Video Deal With Cinema Guild

Philip Hobel, Chairman of The Cinema Guild, and Oliver Groom, President of Toronto-based Project X Distribution, announced today an exclusive home video partnership between the two companies. Eleven Project X titles, previously released in the U.S. by defunct New Yorker Home Video under a service arrangement, will now be available through the Cinema Guild’s new home video label. The Cinema Guild will also handle the DVD releases of new Project X titles.

The first release will be Christian Petzold’s debut feature, “The State I Am In” on July 28, 2009, followed by Peter Watkins’ 14 hour peace documentary “The Journey.”

The catalog titles include the “Cinema of Peter Watkins “collection with such releases as “Punishment Park” (1971), “Edvard Munch” (1974), “The Gladiators” (1969), “The War Game” (1965) / “Culloden” (1964), “The Freethinker” (1994) and “Privilege” (1967); as well as two films from Swedish director Mai Zetterling, “Loving Couples” (1964) and “The Girls” (1968); and Henning Carlsen’s award-winning adaptation of Knut Hamsun’s classic novel “Hunger” (1966).

“We have great admiration not only for the types of films Project X releases, but for the level of care and attention they put into each release. We are delighted to have them as part of our growing home video line,” commented Ryan Krivoshey, Director of Distribution for The Cinema Guild, in a statement.

“It’s very important for Project X to find the right like-minded company to team up with and I’m very much looking forward to working with the guys at The Cinema Guild,” commented Oliver Groom, President of Project X Distribution, in a statement. “Furthermore, between us we now have 4 films by the German director Christian Petzold under one roof. He’s a rising star in world cinema.”
