Sarasota: Being There

Sarasota: Being There

Some last photo moments from the 2009 Sarasota Film Festival:

(Lido Beach in Sarasota was hopping on Saturday, after a rainy and overcast Friday that kept most of us in screenings. Photo by Devon Wilson.)

(It was a tad smaller but no less enjoyable, the annual Night of 1000 Stars party at Sarasota Film Festival. There was still plenty of food and entertainment, as well as plenty of cougars and plastic surgery. Does Sarasota have the most plastic surgeons per capita? Anyway, partaking in the food/drinks but not the plastic surgery, here’s Brock Enright director Jody Lee Lipes, left, with his producer, Kyle Martin, right. They’re flanking You Won’t Miss Me director Ry Russo-Young. Brock Enright won the documentary special jury prize.)

(Winner of the documentary grand jury prize, was Ben Steinbauer’s Winnebago Man. And, here at the 1000 Stars party, are Winnebago Man producers Joel Heller and Malcolm Pullinger.)

(At the pre-awards reception at the Sarasota Opera House on Saturday, I ran into The Family Jams director Kevin Barker, Hammer To Nail writer Michael Tully, and Art & Copy director Doug Pray.)

(After the awards presentation, the festival hosted a panel discussion about legendary filmmaker Hal Ashby. The late Ashby was honored by the festival with an award as well as a great documentary about his astounding body of work. The festival curated a retrospective of nearly all of Ashby’s classic work, including Harold and Maude, The Last Detail, Shampoo, and a director’s cut of his “lost” film Lookin’ To Get Out. The panel discussion was moderated by Sarasota FF programmer Tom Hall, far left, and included: Coming Home and Lookin’ To Get Out star Jon Voight, Lookin’ To Get Out co-star Burt Young, Ashby photographer Dianne Schroeder, and Ashby biographer Nick Dawson. Dawson’s new book, Being Hal Ashby: Life of a Hollywood Rebel, was released last month.)
