You have a few more weeks to get your schedule ready for the BAMcinemaFEST, the first annual film festival specially curated for the Brooklyn Academy of Music. BAM is a great place to see films all year long, but from June 17 to July 2, you can catch some of this year’s biggest indie hits from the 2009 circuit (thus far). Things kick off with Cruz Angeles’ debut feature, Don’t Let Me Drown, and then rock into high gear with daily screenings in the evenings. Like any good film festival in its first year, BAMcinemaFEST is all about curating some great content, rather than be a premiere-heavy attempt at a buyers’ market.
To that point, New Yorkers can now see big-screen presentations of hits from Sundance (In The Loop, Humpday, Children of Invention, You Won’t Miss Me), Berlin (The Exploding Girl, What’s On Your Plate, Beeswax), and SXSW (Brock Enright: Good Times Will Never Be the Same, The Square, and Sorry, Thanks). And, it wouldn’t be BAM without some killer retrospective screenings like Fritz Lang’s Metropolis screened with live musical accompaniment or “An Evening with Arnaud Desplechin,” where the popular French filmmaker screens some of his favorites. Recalling my recent years in Austin, I’m also enticed by some of the movie “marathons” scheduled for the fest, dubbed “BAMcinematek All Night.” One of the programs is “Before They Were Scientologists,” showcasing Top Gun, Staying Alive, and Look Who’s Talking Too. This will run alongside other marathons happening on June 27, such as “All Night Bong” (with Friday and Pineapple Express) or “Diana Ross Coming Out” (with The Wiz and Mahogany).
