iTunes Doesn’t Like Dick

iTunes Doesn't Like Dick

One final Kirby Dick-related post.

I was putting together a page on indieWIRE that links to all of the podcasts from out Tribeca Talks series, and I came across this very strange detail. Kirby Dick’s last name is censored on all of the listings for his podcast:

I can only assume (and hope) this is some sort of glitch, but seriously Apple: Dick? Its a pretty tame word to begin with, and has a long history of being more widely known as a person’s name than penis slang. So I don’t even understand why a glitch would accidentally pick up on it.

If you search the Apple Store for Dick, a bizarre mix of censored and uncensored Dicks and D**ks come up. Par example, Dick Van Dyke singing Chim-Chim-Cher-ee from “Mary Poppins” is all cool, but Andrew Fleming’s movie “D**k” is not (its the president’s fucking nickname!):

Its just kind of hilarious that Kirby Dick, a man who’s previous film was about censorship in the film industry, and latest film discusses how the media has censored information about closeted homo politicians… has been censored himself – not because of what he discloses (the podcast itself is not at all censored), but because his last name is a euphemism for penis. So is my first name, but you can be sure iTunes doesn’t call it P***r, Paul and Mary.

***UPDATE: Apparently, some folks in the US looked it up and the D**k was Dick. It turns out – in a strange turn of events – its specifically CANADIAN iTUNES that doesn’t like D**K
