Paris Hilton Misses Plane to Cannes; Her Doc Gets Distribution... On MTV

Last September, Adria Petty‘s documentary “Paris, Not France” debuted to lots of publicity and half-decent reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival. Then we never heard anything about it again. There were rumors at the time at Paris Hilton – the subject of the documentary – wasn’t keen on the film. indieWIRE reported at the time:

“Paris, Not France” has been the subject of some controversy at the Toronto International Film Festival. Just days before the festival began, it came out that the festival had reduced its screenings to just one, allegedly due to pressures from the Hilton camp. William Morris agent Cassian Elwes sent out an e-mail to acquisitions and buyers an hour before its Tuesday screening, noting:

“With less than one hour to go and no restraining order in place, I feel comfortable now letting you all know that this film was the subject of legal threats and was almost not shown at all here at the festival… This version will probably never be seen again. I am hoping that Paris will see, with the audience tonight, that there is nothing to be afraid of here. And will eventually let the film be distributed…”

Paris attended the screening, and from what I saw there was nothing for her to be afraid of. The film was very complimentary to her, at some points reading like a marketing tool. It paints a portrait of her as an intelligent, media-savvy woman whose public identity has been a construct of society’s obsession with a certain kind of celebrity. It’s nothing revelatory, really… but it’s a mildly interesting little film. Think somewhere in between the glory of Madonna: Truth or Dare and the manipulated marketing tool that was Britney Spears: For The Record.

Anyway, eight months later, that same Cassian Elwes of William Morris Independent has commenced worldwide sales at the Cannes Market for the film. Hilton was supposed to arrive this weekend, but missed her flight. Screen is reporting that she’ll now arrive Tuesday (is there no flight today or tomorrow?), AND that Elwes has closed a US TV deal with MTV for early summer broadcast, and that TVA has taken Canadian TV rights. Which I guess makes perfect sense for this project, even if it might somewhat undermine Petty’s occasionally insightful work (I can just picture the promos – Britney Spears: For The Record styles – now).

Anyway, here’s the trailer:
