Worldwide Deal for Tribeca Fest’s “Eclipse”

Worldwide Deal for Tribeca Fest's "Eclipse"

Conor McPherson’s world premiere, “The Eclipse,” has been acquired by Magnolia Pictures in the waning days of the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. The film, which stirred industry interest immediately after its debut at the festival last week in New York City, was written and directed by McPherson and stars fest best actor winner Ciaran Hinds, Iben Hjejle and Aidan Quinn.

Festival insiders were rooting for a deal to close on the popular Tribeca title before the end of the event, which wraps up this weekend. The movie drew considerable interest among buyers, reportedly stirring inquiries or offers from companies ranging from Miramax and Sony Pictures Classics to Roadside Attractions and IFC Films.

Josh Braun of Submarine brokered the mid-six figure pact with Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles, SVP Tom Quinn and company international sales head Laird Adamson.

An acclaimed playwright, McPherson wrote “The Weir” and “The Seafarer.” Commenting on the deal, in a statement tonight, Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles said, “With ‘The Eclipse’ Conor McPherson’s infinite talent as a playwright has been matched by his filmmaking skill. This fantastic and fantastical film is one of the most fresh and original films I’ve seen in quite some time.”

Described as, “a hauntingly beautiful and atmospheric drama about coping with grief and the redemptive power of love,” the film is set in the Irish seaside town of Cobh. It’s further described as, “the story of a recent widower who is trying to adjust to his role as the sole caretaker of his two young children, but is increasingly haunted by frighteningly real nightmares that are starting to spill into his waking hours.”

indieWIRE published an interview with McPherson earlier this week and hosted an Apple Store Soho chat with him last week.
