Polaris Long List Announced

Polaris Long List Announced

The Polaris Music Prize, Canada’s version of the UK’s Mercury Prize, has announced the 2009 “long list,” consisting of the top 40 full-length Canadian records released from June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009, according to an initial vote by the 181 members of the Polaris Music Prize jury. The jury consists of music journalists, broadcasters and bloggers from across Canada, and the eventual winner takes home a $20,000 prize.

Last year’s winner was Caribou, while in the past prize’s short history Final Fantasy (2006) and Patrick Watson (2007) have also won. Watson, nominated again this year, has frequently gone on record saying he used his prizewinnings on a gold-plated hot tub and a since-trashed tour van.

The official ten album short list is scheduled to be unveiled July 7, broadcast live by CBC Radio 3
