Direct to VOD: Cinetic's Film Buff Launches with New Orleans Mon Amour

More and more, movies that ordinarily would get a theatrical release are taking the direct train to VOD. In this instance, writer-director Michael Almereyda’s New Orleans Mon Amour, which was filmed in post-Katrina New Orleans with real folks as well as a few good actors, played the 2008 fest circuit, including SXSW. Now the hurricane recovery drama (which conjures up the post-atomic classic Hiroshima Mon Amour) will make its debut July 15 on Cable VOD via the new channel Cinetic Film Buff, followed by portals iTunes and Amazon VOD.

Ex-SXSW programmer Matt Dentler plans to release five new or library films via Cinetic Film Buff every month, reported Mike Jones at CineVegas:

Cinetic is in talks with several distribs to mine their libraries for VOD release, including the troubled New Yorker Films.

After starting off writing for the studios, Almereyda has enjoyed a run as an idiosyncratic indie director of both docs and features. He’s best known for his bold 2000 contemporary retelling of Hamlet, starring Ethan Hawke, which screens at Lincoln Center this month as part of their tribute to William Shakespeare.

Set a year after the hurricane, New Orleans Mon Amour stars Christopher Eccleston (Jude) as a surgeon (strangely named Dr. Jekyll) who is trying to reboot his old practice in the wealthy Garden District. Newly remarried to his ex-wife (Laurie Fox), he nonetheless hooks up with ex-lover Hyde (!), now a 9th Ward relief worker (Mad Men‘s Elisabeth Moss). They find that the more they try to solve New Orleans’ problems, the more they create for themselves. The film also features Deadwood star Dayton Callie.
