Global Lens 2009 Hits Orlando

Global Lens 2009 Hits Orlando

Kudos to OMA, the Orlando Museum of Art, for bringing in Global Lens 2009, the travelling international film festival curated by the Global Film Initiative. Beginning tomorrow, July 10, and running through November 1 on select weekends, OMA will be the host for 3 – 5 screenings of each of these notable works of cinema from all over the world, including countries that don’t often get films shown in the US (with the exception of perhaps NY and LA). I’ve yet to see any of these titles in my festival travels, but it looks to be a fascinating lineup:

Teresa Prata’s SLEEPWALKING LAND (Mozambique), Zhang Yang’s GETTING HOME (China), Marat Sarulu’s SONG FROM THE SOUTHERN SEAS (Kazakhstan), Teona Strugar Mitevska’s I AM FROM TITOV VELES (Macedonia), Sandra Kogut’s MUTUM (Brazil), Victor Arregui’s MY TIME WILL COME (Ecuador), Nan Triveni Achnas’ THE PHOTOGRAPH (Indonesia), Sandra Gugliotta’s POSSIBLE LIVES (Argentina), Naghi Nemati’s THOSE THREE (Iran), and Faouzi Bensaidi’s WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD (Morocco).

A pretty diverse group if I say so myself. Curiously the only one of these filmmakers I’m familiar with is Zhang Yang from China, whose SHOWER was a hit at the Toronto Film Festival almost a decade ago and saw a domestic release through Sony Pictures Classics. But just because these films are lesser known or aren’t being released through the specialty distributors in the States doesn’t mean they’re not worthy. So be sure to make plans to check out the festival and support independent and foreign film in Central Florida–admission to the films gets you into the museum’s galleries as well (now that’s a deal!). And while you’re at it, don’t forget that tomorrow (7/10) Enzian opens Yojiro Takita’s DEPARTURES, this year’s surprise Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film.
