Magnolia Captures Shelly-Penned "Serious Moonlight"

Magnolia Pictures has picked up “Serious Moonlight,” which is actress-screenwriter Adrienne Shelly’s first work to be produced posthumously. The film, which debuted at Tribeca this year, is the directorial debut of Cheryl Hines, star of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and supporting actress in Shelly’s “Waitress.” “Serious Moonlight” stars Meg Ryan as a high-powered attorney whose husband (Timothy Hutton) is about to leave her for a younger woman (Kristen Bell). Ryan’s character holds her husband captive until he promises to love her and stay with her forever. The film also stars Justin Long.

The film is produced by Andy Ostroy’s all for A films, along with “Waitress” producer Michael Roiff for Night & Day Pictures. “Moonlight” will be released first through Magnolia’s Ultra VOD program, a month before its theatrical release in early December, 2009. Magnolia’s Senior Vice President Tom Quinn and Head of Business Affairs Chris Matson negotiated the deal with Andrew Herwitz of the Film Sales Company and attorney John Logigian.

“Cheryl Hines has done a fine job bringing Adrienne Shelly’s final script to life,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “‘Serious Moonlight’ is a fitting tribute to a sorely missed talent, and we’re happy to be bringing it to North American audiences.”
