Rooftop Films Brings Rotterdam to the Top of the Town

Rooftop Films has announced a new program that pairs the New York film organization with the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) to present two films from the winter fest at Rooftop during its annual Summer series. Two films will be shown in the pilot program for this partnership, which was alluded to in an indieWIRE profile on Rooftop Films published in June. The two films will be screened this Friday and Saturday, July 17 & 18. The films are Edwin’s Indonesian film “Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly” and Eugenio Polgovsky’s Mexican film “Los Herederos.” Both screenings will include Q&A’s with filmmakers.

This Friday, July 17, “Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly” will screen on the roof of the Old American Can Factory in Gowanus. A serious but playful look at the Chinese minority community in Indonesia. The film was honored with the FIPRESCI Award of the international film critics’ jury at Rotterdam’s VPRO Tiger Awards competition. On July 18, “Los Herederos,” a doc centering on a remote Mexican village of young workers, will screen atop El Museo del Barrio in East Harlem. Rooftop Film’s 13th year continues with other independent feature and short titles throughout the city until mid-September. Both films screened at IFFR and have been supported financially by its Hubert Bals Fund, which provides finishing funds to films in the developing world.

The collaboration sets out to raise the profile and track record of both films in the US. Rooftop Films Founder and Artistic Director Mark Elijah Rosenberg said of the partnership, “Both our festivals are dedicated to supporting truly independent filmmakers who are making daring films, and in finding unique new ways to produce and exhibit these films. It’s an honor for Rooftop and the Rooftop Filmmakers’ Fund to be working with Rotterdam on this new venture.”
