Tribeca’s New Doha Fest Joins Busy Mid-East Roster

Tribeca's New Doha Fest Joins Busy Mid-East Roster

The Doha Tribeca Film Festival has announced that the first Festival will be launched in Doha, Qatar October 29 – November 1, 2009 (the film festival will originally slated for November 10 – 14). Through “extensive collaboration” between the Tribeca Film Festival (TFF) and the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA), the Doha Tribeca Film Festival will showcase the “best of the local Qatari community” as well as “the broader Arab culture.” The festival “will welcome the community, diverse audiences and the global filmmaking industry with a highly curated program as well as family friendly events that will help to build, inspire and infuse film focused educational initiatives in Qatar.”

The Doha Tribeca Film Festival was formed through a cultural partnership by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani and the Tribeca Film Festival Founders, Jane Rosenthal, Craig Hatkoff, and Robert De Niro. The Festival was announced in November of 2008 and the first edition will be hosted at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar.

The festival will be modeled after the annual Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, which is going into its ninth year. The program will include approximately 40 films, as well as special events. “We hope that film will not only be used as a form of entertainment at Tribeca Film Festival Doha but play a role in bridging cultures closer together,” Robert deNiro had said in a statement when the collaboration was originally announced. “By learning each other’s stories, we can see how much we share in common as well as explore and better understand our differences.”

Doha Tribeca will join an emerging group of festivals running within a similar timeframe in the Middle East. The 3rd Middle East International Film Festival will run in Abu Dhabi from October 8-17, while the 6th Dubai International Film Festival will take place December 9-16.

Details on the program will be announced later this Summer and in the Fall.
