"White Ribbon" To Open New Horizons

Michael Haneke’s Palme d’Or-winning “The White Ribbon” will open the 9th edition of the Era New Horizons International FIlm Festival, to be held in the city of Wroclaw, Poland from July 23-August 2, 2009. The film, which also won the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize in Cannes, is set in a small town in northern Germany just before World War I, and refers to the origins of the totalitarian systems that would soon engulf Europe a decade later. The film will be making its Eastern European Premiere at the Festival.

The Era New Horizons International FIlm Festival is the largest in Poland, attracting nearly 130,000 spectators last year. For its program this year, the Festival will present over 500 films from 45 countries to be announced in the coming days, including 250 feature titles. Most will be Eastern European or Polish premieres, bringing over 600 screenings to Festival audiences.

In addition to “Ribbon”, the Festival announced Pen-ek Ratanaruang’s “Nymph” as part of the festival. The film screened this year at Cannes in Un Certain Regard section.
