Goldywn Inks With Upstart EPIX

Samuel Goldwyn Films has signed an exclusive deal to release up to twenty upcoming films on EPIX, the new multiplatform small screen distribution outlet being launched by Paramount Pictures, MGM, and Lionsgate. The upstart premium cable, VOD and Internet service, launching later this year, will offer films from Goldwyn’s 2010 and 2011 theatrical slate.

Goldwyn has yet to unveil its full 2010 roster, but said that Udayan Prasad’s “The Yellow Handkerchief,” starring William Hurt, Maria Bello, Kristen Stewart and Eddie Redmayne, is on tap for next year.

Founded to compete with other premium outlets such HBO, Showtime, and Starz, EPIX is aiming to show momentum as it moves towards its fourth quarter ’09 debut. The new company recently announced that it will be carried by Verizon.

“EPIX is developing a brand and an approach that is transforming the way films are viewed by consumers,” said Goldwyn president and COO Meyer Gottlieb, in a statement. “We chose EPIX because we want to be part of this new approach to deliver our films to consumers in the way they want to see them. This agreement allows Goldwyn to have its films showcased on what will become a unique and terrific premiere pay television service.”

In addition to the twenty Goldwyn titles, EPIX will feature films and specials from its founding companies, including Paramount, Paramount Vantage, MTV Films and Nickelodeon Movies released since 2008 and MGM, UA and Lionsgate films from this year. EPIX will have access to more than 15,000 films from the libraries of its founders.

“Movies are what consumers want to watch on television, on demand, on their computers and on their mobile devices,” EPIX president and CEO Mark Greenberg said, in a statement that also praised Goldwyn. “EPIX is the only service available today which will be able to meet that consumer demand – anytime, anywhere and on any platform.”
