“Greatest,” “Parnassus” To Bookend Hamptons Fest

"Greatest," "Parnassus" To Bookend Hamptons Fest

The US premiere of Terry Gilliam’s “The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus” will close off the 17th Annual Hamptons International Film Festival, it has been announced. The film -starring the late Heath Ledger, as well as Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell who stepped in to assume Mr. Ledger’s role after he passed away during production – will close off the fest on October 12, 2009.

“It is truly an honor to present the U.S. Premiere of Terry Gilliam’s ‘The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus’,” said Executive Director Karen Arikian in a statement. “Heath Ledger was a terrific actor, and someone who all of us – industry and public alike held dearly as an artist. For the Hamptons to be the first festival in the U.S. to share his last film with our audiences is truly an honor.”

The festival also announced its opening night and centerpiece films. “The Greatest,” the directorial debut by Shana Feste, will open the fest. Starring Susan Sarandon, Pierce Brosnan, and Carey Mulligan, it’s the story of a family that’s disintegrating as they deal with the death of their child and their surviving son’s drug use. The film had premiered earlier this year at Sundance. The Centerpiece film has been announced as “Solitary Man,” directed by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, and starring Michael Douglas, with Danny DeVito, Susan Sarandon and Mary-Louise Parker, Jesse Eisenberg and Jenna Fisher. Douglas stars in this tale of a New York businessman experiencing a mid-life slump so severe that it is more catastrophe than crisis. The film is premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival.

“We are so excited to feature Shana Feste’s moving and unique film as the opener of our 17th edition” said Director of Programming David Nugent, in a statement. “Pierce Brosnan, who does double duty in ‘The Greatest’ as both star and producer, has delivered a stirring performance and we’re delighted that he will be joining us for the festival.”

The 2009 Hamptons International Film Festival takes place Thursday to Monday, October 8th – 12th.
