A Prophet Leads European Film Award Nominations

A Prophet Leads European Film Award Nominations

The European Film Academy nominations for the 22nd European Film Awards were voted on by over 2,000 EFA members who will now choose the winners. They will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on December 12 in Bochum.

Some nominated films are last year’s news (Slumdog Millionaire, The Reader) but others do get a boost in the Oscar race, including A Prophet, submitted by France, which scored six nominations, and White Ribbon, Germany’s Oscar entry, with four. Unlikely to be a factor in the Oscar race is Lars von Trier’s Antichrist, which scored noms for the director, cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle and actress Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Of the U.S. distribs, Sony Pictures Classics is having a good day. By my count they earned 15 nominations (A Prophet, White Ribbon, Coco before Chanel, Broken Embraces), followed by IFC (Looking for Eric, Antichrist, Fish Tank, Vincere) with nine, Music Box (Seraphine, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), five, Fox Searchlight (Slumdog Millionaire), five, and Weinstein Co. three (The Reader).

Full list of nominations on the jump.
