Introducing criticWIRE: Sokurov's "The Sun" Tops This Week

Alexander Sokurov’s “The Sun,” from the 2005 Berlinale, is currently atop indieWIRE’s new criticWIRE among films opening in theaters this week. The new section of indieWIRE, being officially unveiled today, features hundreds of grades for new and recent films from dozens of film critics and bloggers.

More than 90 film critics and bloggers, so far, now have their own pages on the indieWIRE site. The new criticWIRE section includes RSS feeds and links for the individual writer’s blog, website and Twitter account, as well as grades for current films and direct links to reviews they’ve written. The list of critics and graded films will continue to grow, leading up to our annual indieWIRE Critics Poll next month.

As of this afternoon, Sokurov’s “The Sun” — which will open in this Wednesday — has an average grade of “A-” from a group of ten surveyed critics. Acclaimed on the festival circuit four years ago, the film is finally coming to the U.S. after securing distribution via Lorber Films. The movie is the third feature in Aleksandr Sokurov’s “Dictator Trilogy.”

Writing about “The Sun” on the site Not Coming to a Theater Near You, Leo Goldsmith described the movie as,” an idiosyncratic portrait of Emperor Hirohito, narrowly focused on the days leading up to and following Japan’s surrender to Allied forces at the end of World War II.” He praised the film, saying, “‘The Sun’ accomplishes the greatest feat that any historical film can: to leave the viewer more confused and uncertain about his or her knowledge than he or she was before the film began.”

Other films opening this week, include John Woo’s “Red Cliff” with a ‘B’ rating so far and Pedro Almodovar’s “Broken Embraces,” which has a ‘B-‘ as of this afternoon. Additional grades and links to reviews are added in on an ongoing basis so average grades are likely to change.
