Israel Film Festival to Honor Gould, Schrader

The Israel Film Festival will honor actor Elliott Gould with a Lifetime Achievement Award when it kicks off December 5 at New York’s SVA Theater. Also that evening, writer/director Paul Schrader will receive the 2009 IFF Achievement in Cinema Award and Donald Krim, President of Kino International, will be honored with the 2009 IFF Visionary Award for his devotion to showcasing Israeli cinema in the United States.

The opening night film will be the Israeli release “A Matter of Size,” a comedy about a group of four overweight friends in the Israeli city of Ramle who decide to start a sumo wrestling club in order escape from the dictatorship of diets and to pursue a sport where their size is an asset. Directed by Sharon Maymon and Erez Tadmor, the film was nominated for 14 Israeli Academy “Ofir” awards in 2009. Erez Tadmor will be in town to attend the Opening Night of the 2009 Israel Film Festival.

Between December 5 and 13, the festival will present nearly 30 Israeli features, documentaries, and award-winning student shorts, with about 15 Israeli filmmakers expected to attend and participate in the event. The lineup:
