South Park Skewers The Cove and Avatar

Bad news: the dolphin-killing expose The Cove did not land an International Documentary Association best feature nomination.

Good news: A Tokyo Film Festival screening made a significant impact in Japan, where dolphin hunting has dropped dramatically, from 20,000 last fall season to 75 this time, says Roadside Attractions co-president Howard Cohen. Comedy Central’s South Park made fun of Japanese dolphin-killers in a recent episode which has been making the rounds (on the jump).

This week South Park‘s “Dances with Smurfs” episode targets James Cameron’s Avatar, which doesn’t open until December 18.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is hilariously funny. But Werner Herzog and Nic Cage are as serious as a heart attack. This reminds me of other straight-on movies that played like comedies: Whit Stillman’s Metropolitan and Alan Rudolph’s Choose Me.
