Goodbye, Dubai

Goodbye, Dubai

I am a few hours from leaving Dubai. I just got out of the closing night screening of James Cameron’s “Avatar,” which I must say I was very underwhelmed by… watching it here felt ridiculously appropriate as both the film and the city overambitious and boastful, but ultimately hollow and downright laughable… i’m glad i’ll never experience either ever again.

My 14 1/2 hour flight back to Toronto leaves super early so I’m attempting an all nighter, catching up on e-mails, etc to keep me awake. I’ll get to the down and dirty when I return and don’t feel Emirati Big Brother breathing down on me, but let me leave off my use of Dubai’s horrid internet services by uploading a shitload of pictures from the absolute high point of the trip and enough to make me feel shit for complaining in the first place… a desert safari. You and a few dozen other mostly European tourists go out into the middle of the desert on a bunch of jeeps, watch the sunset, ride camels, and get drunk. It was everything I could ever ask for. A few photos first, a good dozen or two more after the jump.
