Oscar Watch: New Carpetbagger Hits Award Circuit

Melena Ryzik is the NYT’s new “guide on the red carpet to the news and the nonsense of awards season, covering the Golden Globes, the Oscars and more,” reads the new “about” section of The Carpetbagger. She’s the NYT staffer who replaces the alter-ego of NYT media columnist David Carr, who burned out on Oscar-watching.

Ryzik will be joined by LA staffers Michael Cieply, Brooks Barnes and Rebecca Cathcart, she writes. “They will take a look at films and the people who make and star in them, business trends, technical breakthroughs and interesting moves by the moguls.” She starts out covering The Gothams and upcoming Oscarcast co-host Alec Baldwin, who recently insisted that 30 Rock would mark the end of his acting career. Methinks he doth protest too much: his movie career should come roaring back to life when he lands an Oscar nom for his butt-naked romp opposite pot-smoking Meryl Streep in Nancy Meyers’ hilarious boomer relationship comedy It’s Complicated.

Ryzik also picks up where Carr left off on Twitter.
