The origins of that SNL sketch

Too busy watching the suspenseful but great ending to the UT/Nebraska game Saturday night? Well, check your DVR or Hulu, as I did. This weekend’s Saturday Night Live, hosted by Blake Lively, was actually pretty solid all around. One sketch that has everyone blogging and Tweeting (besides the crazy astronaut/potato chip bit), was this faux commercial for some sort of crazy music festival:

However, most people writing about this sketch seem to think it was just some crazy idea by the writers of SNL. True, but it’s also not too far removed from its inspiration: a summertime video (what took them so long?) that was used as an infomercial for the 10th annual “Gathering of the Juggalos.” This thing became somewhat viral, but leave it to SNL to make it hit the mainstream (fast-forward to 7:00, where it starts getting crazy):
