Over coffee today with outgoing MPAA chairman Dan Glickman–who served as Agriculture Secretary in the Clinton administration and plans to return to public service on September 1 when he stops repping the Hollywood studios in Washington–he made clear how much devastated Haiti, which is just 300 miles away from the U.S., needs support from folks in Hollywood. “Our industry needs to step up,” Glickman said. “Now [relief organizations] are focused on clean-up, medicine and food. Development work will be done later on.”
You can make donations to the Red Cross or the United Nations World Food Programme, Glickman said, pointing to the official White House website. (36 U.N. peacekeepers in Haiti were confirmed dead after their hotel collapsed in the quake.) Anyone can instantly donate $10 to the Red Cross (which will be charged to your phone bill) by texting “HAITI” to “90999.”
Marc Malkin reports that George Clooney may be calling Twilight stars Rob Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart (who has two films at Sundance) to help at his January 22 Haiti Telethon, which will be broadcast on MTV–as well as ABC, NBC, HBO and CNN. The Auteurs reports on a filmmaker collective raising funds for Haiti. And marketer Susan Jacobs sent a passionate plea to her email lists, below.
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
This is my personal plea asking you to help Haiti. As you may know, for almost four years I spent a tremendous amount of time in Haiti developing a number of projects that we were trying to get off the ground with both the government and private sector. I fell in love with the country and its people, who have an amazing spirit. Like so many others, we have a lot of friends/family we can’t find.
On a good day, Port-au-Prince is ill-equipped to function properly, so what’s happened is beyond comprehension. Haitians are the strongest, most patriotic, united people I’ve ever met, so I believe they will come through this, but the loss and suffering is too painful to imagine. I just heard from someone that returned from Haiti today that what we’re seeing and hearing doesn’t scratch the surface for what’s going on.
There are many ways to donate through legitimate major organizations like the Red Cross, World Food Program, Doctors Without Borders, Food for the Poor, etc. People often want to donate to smaller organizations but don’t know which are the right ones. Needless to say anywhere you make a donation will help, but I’ve chosen to donate to the Lambi Fund, an organization that I’ve worked with, that’s on the ground in Haiti doing fantastic work, and that I totally trust. Lambi Fund is not a first responder, but a second responder which means that they’ll be there long after the relief service providers leave, working to rebuild Haiti. Their first step will be to help members of peasant groups get food and essentials for their families to re-establish their lives. Please visit Lambi Fund for more information or to make a donation.
Remember to be grateful for everything we take for granted.
PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW AND DONATE TODAY.
Thanking you in advance for your support and prayers.
