Apple chief Steve Jobs today unveiled iPad, a new Apple device that fits somewhere in between a photo and a laptop. It’s better than the current generation of small Netbook computers that are increasingly popular, Jobs said this morning during a 90 minute announcement in San Francisco.
“The problem is, netbooks aren’t better at anything,” Jobs said, before holding a new iPad tablet device in front of a cheering crowd.
Reuters offered buzz about the device earlier today ahead of the Apple announcement and the New York Times, in a live blog, says the new iPad “looks like a big iPhone.” Last night, the NY Times considered how the new tablet will support content publishers at a time of dwindling revenues for print publications.

A half an inch thin and weighing a pound and a half, the new iPad has a 9.7 inch full color screen, offering 16 gb to 64 gb of storage and ten hours of battery life, according to Jobs. In terms of pricing, the new iPad will start at $499 and range up to $829 for various sizes, some devices will be WiFi enabled, while others will be 3G capable. WiFi models will be available in 60 days, while 3G models will debut in 90 days, Steve Jobs said today. Apple and AT&T will offer $29.99 per month for unlimited 3G data with no contract.
“We think we’ve done it,” Steve Jobs said today, concluding the announcement, “We are so excited about this product.” More on the device on the Apple website.
