Roadside Warms to "Winter's Bone"

Roadside Attractions has picked up all North American rights Sundance 2010 U.S. Dramatic Competition feature “Winter’s Bone” by Debra Granik. Roadside will open the film theatrically this summer, with Lionsgate handling all ancillaries later in the year. The distributor’s Dustin Smith and Howard Cohen negotiated the deal with Josh Braun and Jason Janego of Submarine Entertainment, on behalf of the filmmakers.

Adapted from the novel by Daniel Woodrell, he film centers on an Ozark Mountain girl who enters dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact. According to a Sundance description, the film “‘Winter’s Bone’ depicts an archetypal rite of passage from adolescence to adulthood. Only this time, the young warrior is a girl.” Granik’s feature, “Down to the Bone” won two Sundance jury prizes in 2004.

“With ‘Winter’s Bone,’ Debra Granik has crafted a classic detective story, a nail-biting thriller and an unbelievably touching family drama, all in one film,” said Roadside’s Head of Acquisitions and Business Affairs, Dustin Smith in a statement. “It’s everything Sundance is about. It’s everything independent film is about. And it’s everything I go to the movies for. We cannot wait to help Debra and her team get this film in front of as many people as humanly possible.”

“I was drawn to the characters, the setting, and the sound of the dialog,” said Granik in an interview she did with indieWIRE prior to the festival. “I felt that the main character, Ree’s, story was one I’d love to tell.” In the indieWIRE Review for “Winter’s Bone” Eric Kohn called the film, “an elegant, soft spoken noir…Granik simultaneously develops a dreary backwoods environment while situating her layered story of deceit within it.”

“Bone” has a ‘B+’ grade on indieWIRE’s criticWIRE survey featuring grades from 15 crtics and bloggers.
