@Sundance: Cyrus

@Sundance: Cyrus

I had the pleasure of attending the premiere of Jay and Mark Duplass’ new film, Cyrus, on Saturday night at the Eccles in Park City. Jay and Mark are friends of mine, so I’m a bit biased, but I have to say that the movie delivers. It’s a smart, subtle, and dark look at the dysfunctional relationship between a man and woman (John C. Reilly and Marisa Tomei) looking for love despite the interference of her adult son (Jonah Hill). At moments painful, but then also painfully funny, this is the kind of uncomfortable film that begs the question: how long until the Duplass brothers are directing episodes of The Office or Modern Family? Nevertheless, Cyrus a solid step up for the Duplass brothers, a film that should bring them favorable returns with the arthouse crowd. Fox Searchlight will release the film at an undetermined date this year. Be sure to check it out, whether you’re a Duplass fan or not. They do something very unique and mature in Cyrus.
