The 33 Best Female Performances of the 2000s

The 33 Best Female Performances of the 2000s

Compared to yesterday’s list of the best male performances of the 2000s, I had much more trouble narrowing down this female counterpart. While people – myself included – continually bitch about lack of meaty roles for women, there sure were some doozies over the past ten years anyway. Just take a look at the roles I didn’t end up finding room for:

Gillian Anderson in “The House of Mirth,” Anne Hathaway and Rosemarie DeWitt in “Rachel Getting Married,” Meryl Streep in both “Adaptation” and “Julie & Julia,” Holly Hunter in “Thirteen,” Frances McDormand in “Almost Famous,” Juliette Binoche in “The Flight of the Red Balloon,” Tilda Swinton in “Michael Clayton,” Laura Dern in “INLAND EMPIRE,” Patricia Clarkson in both “The Station Agent” and “Far From Heaven,” Charlize Theron in “Monster,” Jeon do-Yeon in “Secret Sunshine,” Catherine Denevue in both “Dancer in the Dark” and “A Christmas Tale,” Scarlett Johannson in both “Ghost World” and “Lost in Translation,” Diane Lane in “Unfaithful,” Catherine O’Hara in “A Mighty Wind,” Vera Farmiga in “Up In The Air,” Helen Mirren in “The Queen,” Jennifer Connelly in “Requiem For A Dream,” Emmanuelle Devos in “Kings & Queen,” Catherine Zeta-Jones in “Chicago,” Maggie Gyllenhaal in “Secretary,” Catalina Sandino Moreno in “Maria Full of Grace,” Keira Knightley in “Pride & Prejudice,” Marion Cotillard in “La Vie En Rose,” Nicole Kidman in “Dogville,” “The Others” and “Margot at the Wedding,” Melissa Leo in “Frozen River,” hell, even Julia Roberts in “Erin Brokovich.”

Those are some damn fine performances, and I could have easily expanded this to 50 or 100. But a) I don’t gots that kinda time and b) it wouldn’t quite be fair to the men (though who am I kidding). So here lies my endlessly tinkered with choices for the 33 best female performances of the 2000s (with videos found for almost all of them – even if they aren’t always optimal), starting off with a bit of a cheat.
