Colts Win Super Bowl! Dewey Defeats Truman! 'Avatar' is Best Picture!

As the New Orleans Saints walked away with their Super Bowl glory this weekend, I had my annual thought about the boxes and boxes of “Super Bowl Champions” merchandise for the losing Indianapolis Colts, which will now become the property of earthquake victims in Haiti. The Academy Awards have never had this problem, because when someone wins, they receive a blank trophy to be engraved days later. This year, though, winners will be able to get their winning trophies engraved the night of the ceremony. All they have to do is show up to the Governors Ball (and, presumably, look for the “Oscar engraving” booth next to the raw bar). Is this all just a ploy to guarantee the winners show up to the official after-party? Maybe, but it also means there will be dozens and dozens of pre-made nameplates for eventual non-winners (I’m looking at you, “Best Supporting Actor” nominees not named Christoph Waltz). Moviefone reports that these unused nameplates will be “recycled.” Maybe leave the nameplate for Woody Harrelson nearby, just in case.
