Gawker Media's Denton Replaces Gawker Editor Snyder with CityFile's Stern

I respect Nick Denton, although I hear he’s a tough taskmaster. I’ve been watching him a long time: he’s ruthlessly competitive and astute about what’s happening in the online media market. And he’s kept his Gawker Media blog empire growing against all odds. He shuts down sites that don’t work, doesn’t pay people too much, folded Defamer into Gawker, and brought in as editor ex-Variety reporter Gabriel Snyder, who grew traffic.

Now the NYT’s David Carr reports that Denton has sacked Snyder in order to bring in new acquisition CityFile and its editor, Remy Stern. Why? Denton never rests on his laurels, never settles. He hears all the noise in the blogosphere and frets. According to Gawker insiders, Denton pushes on traffic–and each day’s all-important breaking news–relentlessly, without much concern for whether stories turn out to be real or not. Fix it later, is the Gawker mantra. As Russ Meyer would say, Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
