Mike Jones' 'Popeye' Coming to the Big Screen At Last

Okay, so maybe it will only be known as “Mike Jones’ Popeye” to some of us in the indie film world, but still exciting news. Friend and journalist Mike Jones has found his script for a reboot of the classic cartoon character, Popeye, moving along with a greenlight. Mike moved with his wife and child to California after a short stint near Austin, where he was working tirelessly on several screenwriting gigs. After a period of time working to get various screenplays off the ground, he was hired by Variety to become their Festivals Editor as well as chief of popular fest blog, The Circuit. Mike was famously one of the key Variety staffers let go in early 2009, so it’s great news that he’s back on the scene, this time as the subject of Variety news instead of the one writing it.

The Variety announcement (which may be hard to read behind the new paywall), states that “Project was a natural fit for Sony, which is bringing a similar project to the bigscreen with ‘Smurfs.’ Sony Pictures Digital Prod. topper Bob Osher also has long-standing relationship with [Scott] Sassa, the former NBC Entertainment topper. [Mike] Jones landed the writing gig based on his buzzed-about screenplay ‘The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break,’ which is in development at the Gotham Group.” When I asked Mike for a comment, he told me “Go screw yourself blog boy, I’m Hollywood now.”*
