Oscar Backstage: Bridges Talks Crazy Heart Win

Bill Condon and Larry Mark’s innovation of having five peers honor the best actress and best actor nominees paid off this year. My favorite was Michelle Pfeiffer’s for Jeff Bridges, which moved him and us. It makes the nominees human. You see their reactions. Jeremy Renner and Gabourey Sidibe both heaved deep sighs, as they tried to cope with the pressure. Oprah Winfrey made her cry, too.

Backstage, Bridges, a glass of champagne in his hand, said that what he had in common with his character Bad Blake was the music. Bridges is considering forming a country band. “The music is going to continue.”

On winning the award: “The downside is losing anonymity,” he said. “The upside is this award will help to bring peace and understanding and prosperity to the world. Movies are connecting us. The movie is about music, music and movies are a common link for all of us. The exciting thing is, the award brings some attention to this great movie. I’m all for these ten-best pictures.”

He thanked his family. “My wife holds that kite string and so sweetly reels me back in. We have been apart eleven of the last fourteen months. So I have been whoo, really far out there. The girls are the tail on the kite that keeps me centered like that.”
