Panahi Arrested in Iran

Jafar Panahi, winner of the Golden Lion at Venice and the Silver Bear at Berlin, has been arrested in his home in Iran, the BBC reports. Panahi, director of “The Circle” and “Offside,” was arrested during the protests and vigils that followed Iran’s elections last year. Earlier this year, he was denied by the Iranian government his request to attend the Berlinale as a special guest. At this time, the Iranian government has not disclosed the reason for his arrest, only saying, “”The arrest of Jafar Panahi is not because he is an artist or for political reason. He is accused of some crimes and was arrested with another person following an order by a judge.”
