Tracy Morgan is not Tracy Jordan

Tracy Morgan is not Tracy Jordan

This is something I knew, but it was definitely proven over the weekend, when I paid a visit to Caroline’s to see Tracy Morgan’s stand-up routine. I’m not afraid to say that I’ve enjoyed Morgan since he was on Saturday Night Live, and I continue to enjoy him on 30 Rock. But, some of his personal appearances suggest, that the man works funnier with writers and editors on his side. Or, at the very least, a formidable interviewer like David Letterman or Jimmy Kimmel. Left alone, his presence onstage is a bit aimless and very, very filthy. In all fairness, Tracy Morgan claimed to have a nasty cold (this news was delivered after 30 minutes of grabbing nearby patrons), and there was even an odd moment where he rested on his knees with a wicked coughing fit. Near the end of the set, Morgan appeared to get a little serious and began discussing that he’s not Tracy Jordan, his popular character on 30 Rock. Somewhere in the hour-plus set of material, there were funny gags and memorable jokes. The most memorable segments, though, were the jokes that were either too-raunchy (which says something, coming from me) or the minutes when we were unsure if Tracy Morgan was being Tracy Morgan.
