Cannes Sections Set Short Films For 2010 Fest; Franco, Dunst On Tap

Three different shorts lineups screening during this year’s Cannes Film Festival have been revealed. The festival’s official competition, as well as the Cinefondation and Critic’s Weeks sidebars all set their shorts lists, which include two works from notable American actors.

The festival’s official short film selection announced nine films that will compete for the Short Film Palme d’Or, which will be awarded during the closing ceremony on May 23rd. These nine short films, running between 10 and 15 minutes, represent a wide range of cinematic genres in animation, documentary and fiction. Latin America is represented particularly well in the lineup, which can be viewed here.

The Cinefondation sidebar of the fest announced 13 student short and medium-length films that were selected from a staggering 1,600 entries submitted by film schools from all over the world. The films, representing 11 countries, will be shown to the Cinefondation and Shorts Jury, presided by Atom Egoyan, who will choose the best three. The awards will be announced on May 21st. The lineup of can be viewed here.

Finally, in an effort to showcase new directing talents, Cannes Critics Week will culminate with the screening two short films from budding directors, who already happen to be international stars. Actress Kirsten Dunst (“Marie Antoinette”) will premiere her second short film “Bastard,” while “Pineapple Express” star James Franco will showcase his third short “The Clerk’s Tale.”

Franco’s “Tale” is a psychological portrait of a gay man trapped in the monotonous routine of life at a high-end menswear store, while Dunst’s “Bastard” “addresses the eerie transformation of a familiar myth when displaced to the present,” according to the Tribeca Film Festival, which will be world premiering the film ahead of Cannes.
